Sweet Potato & Oat Biscuits
These Sweet Potato & Oat Biscuits combine yummy sweet potatoes with hearty oats. Make them as easy finger food or a homemade teething biscuit.
Hanky Pank has been a little bit of a mess the last few weeks. Not only did he get an awful cold, but it was immediately followed by the appearance of his top and bottom canine teeth… So right now I’m all about foods that either help soothe his sore gums or just distract him.
Like most Little Loves, Hanky Pank loves yummy sweet potatoes. And I love hearty oats. These biscuits combine the two to make a wonderful homemade teething biscuit.
But before we get to the recipe, let’s talk about oats (because I’m obsessed). If you have oats, you can make oat flour. Just put it in your blender or food processor and give it whirl. Boom, oat flour!

I like the look of this recipe but I am a little confused. In the ingredients list it doesnt mention vanilla but the instructions do. I am wondering if I do need to add vanilla and if so how much?
Thanks Jody
Hi Jody! I just updated the recipe to include 1/2 teaspoon vanilla in the ingredients. Thanks for catching that!
Can I swap coconut oil for olive oil?
Hi Naomi! I haven’t tried olive oil but I think it would be fine. Let me know how it turns out!
Hi,
Do these dissolve pretty easily once baby’s get a peice off? My one year old has a sensitive gag reflux and has trouble with foods that don’t break down easily in the mouth. Thanks!
Hi Bethany! The biscuits break down easily when chewed, but they won’t simply dissolve like puffs or wafers from the store. They do freeze well if you want to try a biscuit then freeze the rest if your baby is not quite ready. Hope that helps!
I made these for my daughter, and she loves them!! Can’t wait to try this with other spices and veggies/fruits. Thank you for the wonderful recipe.
Hi Pauline! I’m so glad your daughter likes them. Also check out my Banana & Cinnamon Biscuits and Beet, Blueberry & Cinnamon Biscuits. And definitely let me know what other fruits, veggies, and spices you try!
With reheating do I just zap it in the microwave or better to reheat in the oven?
Hi Angela! I usually store these biscuits in the fridge then give them directly to Hanky Pank without reheating. If they’re frozen, I just put them into the fridge to defrost. But if you do want to reheat, I’d just use the microwave. I hope that helps!
Are these supposed to be hard? Because mine turned out soft.
Hi Zarina! They should be soft, more of a cookie than a biscotti, and break down easily when chewed. Hope that helps!
Could I use baby oatmeal cereal in place of the oat flour? I have tons left over from spoon feeding days.
Hi Robyn! Oatmeal cereal is generally just ground oats so this would probably be perfect. Let me know how it goes. I might add that into my post so other people know they can use their leftover cereal!
Mine turned out very hard…my doughter loved them tough!! Im just afraid if they break…she is 11 months.
Hi Tatina! I’m so sorry to hear they turned out hard. If you’re willing to try the recipe again, I’d suggest cooking for less time so they’re softer. But I’m happy to hear your daughter liked them, they’re definitely one of our favorites!
are these biscuits ok for my 8 month old?
Hi Bethany! Oh, this is a tough question for me to answer but it really depends on your baby. They’re soft but don’t just dissolve. So if your baby is comfortable with chewing, these should be ok. Hope this helps and let me know if you give them a try!
My child is allergic to gluten. What gluten-free flour is suitable for dusting?
Hi Nina! Apologies for the late response. Yes, gluten-free flour would absolutely work for dusting!
Thank you so much for this recipe, my 14 month old LOVES them! Just wondering do they have to be stored in the refrigerator/freezer or can they be in an air tight container out of the fridge?
Hi Lili! I usually store them in the fridge, but they should be fine on the counter (similar to a cookie or muffin). I’m love that your little loves them, truly makes my heart happy!
Is it possible to use wheat flour instead of oat ? If yes, will it be also 1 cup ? Thanks !
Hi Mila! Yes, you can definitely use wheat flour instead of oat flour. I’d recommend starting with 3/4 cup and then adding more until you get to a cookie dough like consistency. They’ll like end up looking more like my Banana & Cinnamon Biscuits, which are also a great finger food!
Awesome! My 8 year old and myself didn’t really care for them but my picky 15 month old loves them! And that was the point 🙂 perfect consistency and do not break everywhere. I grounded oats into flour. Thank you for the recipe!
Hi Tamara! I’m so happy to hear your 15-month-old loves them, and completely understand why you and your 8-year-old may not. I will also have to try grinding the oats. Thanks for the idea and your message!
